Khan Academy Virtual School
Free public virtual K-12 schools are appearing around the U.S., sponsored by individual states, and often used as a homeschooling option.  As with any public school, you usually must be a resident of the state to "attend" a state's virtual schools.

State-sponsored virtual schools offer the standard state curriculum, and they follow a standard time table.  Kids are accountable, tested, and must pass state standard requirements to graduate from one of these schools. See the listing of many of these schools at the end of this article.

For kids and even college students attending brick-and-mortar schools, there's another type of free virtual school - the Khan Academy.  Khan Academy is the brainchild of Salman Khan, who envisions this ongoing project as the first worldwide free virtual school for K-12.  His academy of video learning online caught the eye of Bill Gates, and it is a winner of a Tech Award 2009 Microsoft Education Award.


Khan Academy contains a growing video library of more than 1,700 instructional videos in many subjects, starting with basic arithmetic through calculus, economics, science and a smattering of history.  Their math videos for kids and teens are the most extensive of their offerings.  If you register (for free), you can even begin your own self-paced study curriculum using the videos as a guide to solve exercise problems.

I like Khan Academy because it can be used to fill the knowledge gaps for K-12 students. If a student missed school the day they studied Shifting Quadratic Graphs in Algebra II, the academy's math video lesson can bring her up to speed. Or students can review an educational video when they don't understand a concept presented by the teacher. College students are often in the same boat.  They missed or forgot a concept from high school that they now need to know for a college class.  Khan's videos can help them tremendously too.  




While Khan Academy is useful to millions of students worldwide, millions of families in the U.S. are looking for other options when their local schools don't cut it.  Free public (or even private fee-based) virtual K-12 schools give students another route to their high school diplomas.  Check with your state or local school board if traditional schooling is not meeting your child's needs.  Many offer virtual classes within the school to provide more challenging coursework for advanced or gifted students.  Or families may opt for a complete virtual school curriculum from home.

States and communities are adding to their offerings every years. This week, a new Congress begins session by reading the US Constitution aloud in the House of Representatives.  It seems the ideal time to spread the word about iCivics, a website full of eye-catching games designed to immerse middle and high school students in citizenship and our government.

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor conceived the idea for this website (which started as another website, OurCourts).  Her vision is to improve middle school students' understanding of our political system and their role in the process.

So iCivics is all about games that teach.  As of this writing, there are 14 games dealing with citizenship, the Constitution, separation of powers, and executive, legislative and judicial branches.   Corresponding curriculum units for each of these topics include lesson plans and webquests.

Some of the games are designed to be played as a group.  Others are designed to be played individually.  There are even helpful guides for approximately how long it takes to play each game, varying from 15 minutes to more than 30 minutes.  Each lesson with its accompanying game is designed to be completed within a classroom period.

The games focus on policies, legislation and Supreme Court decisions that are relevant to students, such as searches of personal property in school, funding for schools, student safety, and grading.  The realistic complexity of the issues makes the games much more interesting than how-a-bill-becomes-a-law rote Q&A games.

For instance, in the Branches of Power game,  students learn more of what it really takes to enact laws. Students pick their priorities and values.  Then they navigate press conferences, town hall meetings, and conflicting values among supporters and opponents.  They even defend  against legal challenges to legislation they support.  All are played out here as essential parts of the process.  And as in real life, with next election just around the corner, there is a limited amount of time to complete all of the steps to enact legislation.

iCivics has been widely praised by  teachers and students across the country. The games have been played more than a million times in just over a year.  At that rate, Justise O'Connor's vision is well on its way to realization.

PBL - project-based learning - is a current buzz phrase in education and the focus of a lot of discussion among classroom teachers and educators.  But parents, families, and many a teacher are asking what is PBL and what does it mean to my children?

Simply put, PBL is learning in which the student produces something useful to himself and others.  You child's science fair project is a familiar example of project-based learning (PBL).  In the process of creating the project, your child learns the scientific method, how to conducts experiments, gather and analyze data (applying math skills), write a report and present his work (language arts skills).  Unlike traditional classroom lessons, which often emphasize rote memorization, PBL emphasizes innovation & creativity, critical thinking skills, cooperation, collaboration and communication.

It's also the way the real world works. When you think about it, your work life and your home life largely consist of a series of projects.  In the process of repairing or renovating your home, setting up a retirement fund, or starting a small business, you practice these skills and learn all kinds of new facts and skills that are likely to stay with you for the rest of your life. 

But the PBL teaching and learning approach is slow to take off in our K-12 schools.  It takes more time to plan.  It takes extensive collaboration with other teachers.  And it's challenging to incorporate state standards and standardized testing deadlines in PBL projects.

However, there are many online resources to help teachers and school administrators kick-start this effort.  Edutopia is a great launching point for project-based learning.  Their website has videos, examples of lessons and a forum of educators who are working to put PBL into practice in public school classrooms. 


West Viriginia PBL lessons, template, rubrics
 Another helpful resource is the West Virginia Dept. of Education PBL website.  This site has a searchable database of PBL lesson plans starting at 2nd grade.  Equally helpful are their PBL Tools.  These include rubrics and a PBL project planning template that takes state standards into consideration. 

So why go to all this effort to change our approach to teaching and learning?  Because standardized test scores demonstrate that PBL is more effective than the traditional lesson plan model.  Japan thought this approach was so superior that during the past eight years, they adjusted the daily class schedule of schools nationwide to accommodate large segments of project-based learning.  Finland, Sweden and Denmark, whose students score among the highest on international math and science tests, cite PBL as a key reason for their success.

PBL lesson plans and templates are some of the hardest-to-find resources right now.  Because of that, I've compiled a directory of more than 30 free websites for teachers with project-based learning lesson plans, templates, rubrics, professional development and advice.  Please take a look at:

  Building on my previous blog posts of PBL examples of science projects and math projects, today I'll provide some links to websites with social studies project ideas.  Project-based learning in social studies is often integrated with math, science, visual and performing arts and, of course, language arts.

BBC Maths is a British interactive math website designed to help kids learn and practice K-12 math skills.  No, I did not misspell "Maths".  That is the British word for "math".  Whatever way you say it - math or maths - it's still one of the best comprehensive websites out there for students of any country to review (or "revise", as the British say) math concepts.  There are four parts to BBC Maths that are described in more detail below. 



BBC Maths Schools KS1 - Higher Bitesize (K-12)


BBC Math Games for K-2
 KS1 Bitesize Games is for kids in early elementary (K-2) classes.  It helps them learn numeracy - number sense and operations - skills. These includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, telling time, money (using British currency), number sequences, place value, measurements, 2D and 3D shapes, and organizing data. The child selects a skill and difficulty level. Then let the games begin! There is also a printable worksheet for each activity.

KS2 Bitesize is for kids in grades 3-5. The math skills on this site include higher level numeracy skills, fractions, patterns, and simple percentages, shapes, data, and measurements and space.

Each skill has three parts. The first is a read explains a concept, such as decimals. The second part is an activity or game that helps the student practice the skill. The third part is a short interactive quiz to assess the student's mastery of the skill.

For teachers, there are accompanying lesson plans.  Also each activity includes flash code that you can copy and paste into you website or blog, so that your students can use it from your website.   Here's an example:

Secondary Maths is for middle and high school students (roughly grades 6-10). The focus is on skills in advanced numeracy, including order of operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, and exponents. The site builds on skills in geometry, including measurements, shapes and space.  And it introduces algebra forumulas, inequalities, equations, coordinates, graphs and sequences.  To help students master these skills, there are activities in several sections.

KS3 Bitesize (similar to KS2) consists of a Revise (review), activity, and test for each skill.
Maths game show provides skill practice.
The Learning Zone Broadband has a searchable database of brief video clips that help teachers illustrate some of the math concepts (note that these clips are only accessible in Great Britain).
GCSE Bitesize has "bite-size" reviews on high school level math in advanced number skills, algebra, geometry, measurements and data handling.  As with the others, there is a revise (review), sometimes an activity, and a test for each skill.

Finally, Higher Bitesize provides practice for upper high school (grades 10-12) and AP math skills,  There are reviews and tests of concepts in algebra - functions, logarithms, polynomials, quadratic theory, and recurrence equations.  There are reviews of calculus concepts in differentiation and integration.  Geometry reviews include circle, straight line and vectors.  And trigonometry reviews consist of compound and multiple angles, radians and equations, and wave function.

Solving Math Word Problems with Online Tools

If your student or child is struggling with a dreaded math word problem, there are tools to help him reach the solution on his own.  Some of my favorite are on Math Playground, a website with problems,  problem-solving tools, and math games for grades 1-12.  Math Playground was designed by Colleen King, a math teacher and researcher who is continually looking for ways to use technology to increase student understanding of math.

One of  her website's best problem-solving tools is Thinking Blocks™ interactives for problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and ratios, grades 2-7.  These interactives were developed by teachers to help young kids visualize parts, multiple steps, and parts-totals relationships.

Other useful problem-solving tools on Math Playground are the video explanations for solving many different types of word problems.  There are single-stage problems and multiple-stage problems for upper elementary and middle school math concepts using fractions, percentages, ratios, probability, geometry, averages and algebra.

For older students in grades 7 and above,  the SAT section provides step-by-step video guidance for solving word problems typically found on the SAT.  These include probability, data analysis, quadrilaterals, coordinate and solid geometry, among others.

Online, you'll find countless worksheets with word problems.  And there are some online instructions for how to go about solving the problems.  But there are precious few websites that guide kids through problem solving step-by-step.  Math Playground  is one of the best at providing interactive assistance for your child to build confidence in solving word problems.

The Tinker Ball game is one of a growing number of simple machine interactives to help kids understand how simple machines work and how they're used in inventions.  Tinker Ball is an invention at play from the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, through the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. 

The object of the Tinkerball game is get the tennis ball at the top of the screen into the small container at the bottom of the screen.  It provides everyday objects, like funnels, a hockey stick, rulers, gears, and springs.  Kids drag and drop the objects at the right onto the screen to guide the ball in the direction they want it to go.  They can rotate the objects to fit their "inventions."

If  the ball doesn't make it into the container when you release it, you can adjust your invention until you get it right.  Once you've succeeded, the playing screen is wiped clean and you can play Tinker Ball again.

There are lots of simple machine and even physics principles that can be learned with this game.  What type of simple machine is each object?  Can you predict the trajectory of the tennis ball when it bounces off a certain object?  Or how high it will bounce when it hit objects from a certain distance? Can you provide more than one path for the ball to take to reach the container?  Can you use all of the pieces?  Can you create your own Tinker Ball invention in your classroom from objects in the room?

Music and the Brain Podcasts
A series of Music and the Brain podcasts from the Library of Congress can be an inspiration for science music PBL - project-based learning - lessons.  These podcasts focus on the study of neuroscience and music, specifically how music can alleviate depression and grief, improve memory retention, treat illness, and even prevent crime.

The podcasts brought me back to my first teaching experience.  I first started teaching as a substitute at two neighboring elementary schools in a high-poverty area.  The schools were less than a mile apart and had the same demographic population.  But they had markedly different cultures.

Each morning at one school, students were corralled by teachers into the building and told to move quickly and quietly to their classrooms.  Infractions (and there were many) earned quick reprimands.

The other school started each morning with classical music playing outside the building and in the hallways and classrooms.  I relaxed and I could see the kids visibly relax as they entered the school.  There were no discipline problems in the hallways.

So I see how this emerging area of research in neuroscience and music lends itself to a variety of projects for students that could directly impact them in school.  Students could answer questions such as:

  • Can music in the hallways decrease problems that occur there?  What kind of music?  
  • Can music help in the cafeteria as well?
  • Can music help improve the test scores of students who listen to it while studying?  What kind?
  • Is it beneficial in study hall? 
  • Are musical mnemonics effective in helping us memorize stuff?

The students would begin their research by reading previous studies, learning the significant qualities of music involved in research, talking to experts in the field, then constructing their own experiments.  The end product could be a presentation to the school administration, or even school board, of the results of their research, and a recommendation as to whether or not to use music in school, or as a study aid.  

Or students could videotape musical mnemonics for important information and post them to the school website or YouTube.  See my Squidoo post on Memorizing Techniques Using Music for some examples.

A theme throughout the Music and the Brain  podcasts is how young people who were musicians, later gravitated toward medical careers in college.  They found a way to mesh their love of music with medicine and medical research.  What an inspiration for high school students setting out on a career path.

Leibniz occupies a prominent place in the history of mathematics and the history of philosophy. Leibniz developed the infinitesimal calculus independently of Isaac Newton, and Leibniz's mathematical notation has been widely used ever since it was published. Leibniz also developed the binary number system, which is at the foundation of virtually all digital computers.Leibniz was one of the most brilliant and prolific intellectuals ever; and his influence in mathematics (especially his co-invention of the infinitesimal calculus) was immense. His childhood IQ has been estimated as second-highest in all of history, behind only Goethe. Descriptions which have been applied to Leibniz include "one of the two greatest universal geniuses" (da Vinci was the other); "the most important logician between Aristotle and Boole;" and the "Father of Applied Science." Leibniz described himself as "the most teachable of mortals."(1716-11-14

Mathematics was just a self-taught sideline for Leibniz, who was a philosopher, lawyer, historian, diplomat and renowned inventor. Because he "wasted his youth" before learning mathematics, he probably ranked behind the Bernoullis as well as Newton in pure mathematical talent, and thus he may be the only mathematician among the Top Ten who was never the greatest living algorist or theorem prover. We won't try to summarize Leibniz' contributions to philosophy and diverse other fields including biology; as just three examples: he predicted the Earth's molten core, introduced the notion of subconscious mind, and built the first calculator that could do multiplication.
In philosophy, Leibniz is mostly noted for his optimism, e.g. his conclusion that our Universe is, in a restricted sense, the best possible one that a God could have created. Leibniz, along with René Descartes and Baruch Spinoza, was one of the three great 17th century advocates of rationalism. The work of Leibniz anticipated modern logic and analytic philosophy, but his philosophy also looks back to the scholastic tradition, in which conclusions are produced by applying reason to first principles or a priori definitions rather than to empirical evidence. Leibniz made major contributions to physics and technology, and anticipated notions that surfaced much later in biology, medicine, geology, probability theory, psychology, linguistics, and information science. He wrote works on politics, law, ethics, theology, history, philosophy, and philology. Leibniz's contributions to this vast array of subjects were scattered in various learned journals, in tens of thousands of letters, and in unpublished manuscripts. As of 2010, there is no complete gathering of the writings of Leibniz.

Leibniz' thoughts on mathematical physics had some influence. He developed laws of motion that gave different insights from those of Newton. His cosmology was opposed to that of Newton but, anticipating theories of Mach and Einstein, is more in accord with modern physics. Mathematical physicists influenced by Leibniz include not only Mach, but perhaps Hamilton and Poincaré themselves.
